Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then located multiple other vandalized automobiles and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say initial examinations indicate the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism left him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
