Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
