As any significant honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
