The Substance Film
Director Coralie Fargeat's daring commentary addresses the demanding standards for women's appearance and the dreaded aspects of advancing years. This Creepy Thriller
The director's locked-room horror holds up well even without a follow-up. Located in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has made the local kids anxious. However, the old telephone on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, while the intuitive nightmares of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. An effective horror. October 11th, late evening, on Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for Mammon in this director's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who declares at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple begin profiting from the nation's religious faith. It's a riot of tacky decor, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Jessica Chastain achieves to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, on Film4
