Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle management.
